The Misunderstood Disease

There have been advances in many areas of medicine, yet mental illness remains both misunderstood and mistreated.Persons suffering from mental illnesses are still treated as if having mood or perception disorders means they are less intelligent and are incapable of knowing what they think or want.

In the United States, the current trend is to overmedicate people who show any signs of mental illness while ignoring the need for compassionate counseling. The trend of emergency personnel is still to become irritated with persons who arrive in the hospital with mental rather than physical issues.

There is still no avenue for proper treatment of such individuals. I have heard more than one health care professional say that they wished that people who came to the E.R. presenting with self-mutilation would just "do it right and get it over with." This sort of uncompassionate lack of caring is but one reason why persons who are mentally ill are reluctant to get treatment. Another is cost.

Insurance does not provide for psychological counseling any better than it provides for "alternative" health care treatments such as chiropractic care. Many people who are mentally ill lack the resources to afford adequate counseling and the choice becomes to either go to the county mental health center, where the counselors are overworked and used to handling only critical cases, or to forego counseling entirely.

Cost aside, it is difficult to find a counselor that one can trust to treat them like a human being of equal worth rather than a defective second class citizen. Is it any wonder that so many people who are mentally ill go undertreated or untreated?I went on the line and published my book because these issues need to be addressed--worldwide!

I told the truth about the circumstances behind the creation of parts of the story because the spirit with whom I co-authored the book is one of the most shocking examples I've ever seen of how little mental illness is understood and how badly it's stigmatized. The general population needs to be better educated about mental illness, but more sadly still, our medical and even mental health professionals need to learn greater compassion in treating the widespread and diverse problems of sufferers.

Understanding Depression

Anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status, can suffer from depressionA disease that affects millions of Americans each year, believed to be caused by an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain, called neurotransmitters.. It is estimated that 19 million American adults suffer from depression every year. Depression is not a weakness or a character flaw—it is a real medical illness. But the good news is that with proper treatment, 4 out of 5 patients will improve.2

People who suffer from depression are not just moody or have “the blues” for a few days. They experience long periods of feeling very sad and lose interest in social and daily activities. Many feel they have no concentration and no energy. Depression can change the way a person feels, thinks, and behaves.

The causes of depression are not always clear. It may be triggered by an event or for no apparent reason at all. Genetics may also play a role in not providing your brain with enough serotoninA neurotransmitter that is believed to influence mood. SSRIs help relieve the symptoms of depression by increasing the available supply of serotonin in the brain.. Learn more about the causes of depression.

The symptoms of depression may differ from person to person. Some symptoms may include a persistent sad mood, lack of pleasure in activities, change in sleep or eating habits, or a feeling of worthlessness. Learn more about the symptoms of depression.
If you think you may be suffering from depression, take the Depression Self-Screener. Results are anonymous. Be sure to share your answers with your healthcare professional so he or she can properly diagnose your condition and provide appropriate treatment. Only a qualified healthcare professional can diagnose depression.

If you don't know whether or not your depression is serious enough to visit a doctor, read our Seeing a healthcare professional section for guidance.

Dealing with depression can be challenging. But it is treatable with medicine and therapy. Read more about treatment options, and review some suggestions on additional ways of coping with depression.

Did you know that a person can experience both depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) at the same time? Learn more about the connection between depression and GAD.

How to Caulk a Bath Tub

Water will penetrate your bathroom walls and cause expensive damage to your valuable home unless you take precautions with your bathtub.
Steps

1. Examine the joint between the bathtub and the wall. Clean all old caulk, mildew and soap scum from the edge of bathtub. Be careful not to scratch surface of tub. Wipe with rubbing alcohol to clean and remove any moisture from each seam.
2. Use caulk approved for bathroom surfaces. There are choices in color and price. It seems more silicon costs more. Silicon caulk for kitchen and bath has a mildew preventer built in it.
3. Load caulk tube in caulk gun. Using a sharp knife, cut the application tip on score mark. Opening should not be so big that a bead cannot be formed. Opening should not be so small that caulk tube seems highly pressurized. Most tubes have a thin barrier inside the tube to prevent the caulk from curing. Pierce the barrier by inserting a wire, nail or pointed object inside tip.
4. Hold caulk gun over trash and depress trigger to move caulk forward filling the tip. Caulk should flow out, not squirt or drip. Release trigger lock to relieve the light pressure inside tube.
5. Point tip in position at seam. Tip should be slightly above surface, nearly touching. As you begin to press trigger, watch flow of caulk. With one steady motion, move caulk gun straight along seam, creating a uniform bead. Before flow stops, quickly release trigger and begin to press again as you continue to create a uniform bead the entire length of seam. Do not stop until you reach corner.
6. Repeat for each seam, usually three walls.
7. When you stop, remember to release the trigger lock to relieve pressure inside tube or caulk will continue to flow out.
8. Caulk must cure.

Tips

* Fill the tub three quarters of the way full of water to allow the tub to sag while the silicon dries for 24 hours. Otherwise the tub will sag when you get in and pull on the seam causing possible long-term cracking and breaching.
* A sharpened flathead screwdriver works quite well for removing old caulking (be sure not to damage underlying surfaces).
* The process is very similar to decorating a cake.
* Bead must fill seam between wall and bathtub. Bead must contact wall and tub uniformly along entire length or leaks will occur.
* If you do not use the entire tube of caulk, you may plug the tip with an object such as a small wooden rod and cover with plastic or tape. Caulk will keep for a short time.
* You can smooth out the caulk with a wet finger, plastic spoon or rounded ice cube.
* Use a small paper cup filled halfway with lukewarm water, add 2 to 3 drops dishwashing soap and stir gently with your finger to disolve. You don't want suds. Using this to wet your finger will make cleanup easier and the silicone will not want to stick to your finger.
* Silicon caulk is very very sticky and will not come off your fingers easily. Therefore, wear latex gloves when applying silicon caulk
* Clean up and smoothing is easily accomplished with paper towels and "Formula 409" or other similar household cleaner.
* Use blue masking tape along caulk joints to keep the silicone from smearing everywhere (much like taping trim when painting). You can get a nice thin bead this way. First you apply the bead of silicone then wet your finger or whatever tool you are using to remove excess, then immediately remove tape and run your tool along joint again.
* Do one wall at a time because silicone films over rather quickly.
* A little off topic, but when you have a tiled inside corner always use silicone instead of grout. Grout will crack out and will leak in the corners. Look at corners in bathrooms and you will see this aplenty.
* To remove silicone from hands just rub them with a plastic bag. It makes cleanup instant and lets you use your fingers to smooth and finish caulking without worrying about stickiness.
* Be sure to remove all traces of caulk & mildew before applying new caulk- -yes even that residue that seems like it will not come off.

Warnings

* Exercise caution with knife and pointed object.
* Do not use bathtub until caulk cures. See tube for specific instructions.
* Important Tip--Tub should be filled 3/4 full of water during caulking, this prevents any break in the seal due to increased tub weight when it is filled with water.

Well, she's all you'd ever want
She's the kind I like to flaunt and take to dinner
But she always knows her place
She's got style, she's got grace--she's a winner
She's a lady
Oh, whoa, whoa, she's a lady
Talkin' about that little lady
And the lady is mine

Well, she's never in the way
Always something nice to say, and what a blessin'
I can leave her on her own
Knowin' she's OK alone and there's no messin'
She's a lady
Oh, whoa, whoa, she's a lady
Talkin' about that little lady
And the lady is mine

Well, she never asks very much
And I don't refuse her
Always treat her with respect
I never would abuse her
What she's got is hard to find
And I don't want to lose her
Help me build a mountain
From a little pile of clay, hey hey hey

Well, she knows what I'm about
She can take what I dish out, and that's not easy
But she knows me through and through
And she knows just what to do and how to please me
She's a lady
Oh, whoa, whoa, she's a lady
Talkin' about that little lady
And the lady is mine
Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's a lady
Oh, whoa, whoa, she's a lady
Talkin' about that little lady
And the lady is mine

If a man would follow, today, the teachings of the Old Testament, he would be a criminal. If he would follow strictly the teachings of the New, he would be insane.
