It's Hiroshima day -- don't look away

AMERICANS WILL be reminded today of the 60th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Most likely, we will miss once again the true impact of this event,
not just for the Japanese who experienced it,
but also on us and on how we now live.

It's not, of course, that we don't know that Americans flew the planes that killed at least 60,000 Japanese, most of them civilians, in Hiroshima, and,

three days later, 40,000 more in Nagasaki (figures from the Avalon Project at Yale law School). It's not that Americans don't know that the United States remains the only nation ever to have used atomic weapons against civilian populations.

It's that the events, unlike D-Day, say, or the liberation of the concentration camps, place Americans in ambiguous, unpleasant, or even guilty roles.

It seems natural that, as a culture, we prefer to look away. It seems natural that we prefer to emphasize events that reflect how we like to think of ourselves, that show a face we like to show to the world.

So don't expect to see today marked by daylong ceremonies like June 6, the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

Don't expect to see President Bush fly to Hiroshima to make a policy speech there in the way that he and other presidents, most notably Ronald Reagan, have flown to Normandy.

Don't expect to see the crew members of the Enola Gay smiling or saluting into the camera, their faces marked, perhaps, by the weightiness of their deeds.

The anniversary is likely to be mentioned, but quickly, almost as a kind of stealth event, under the radar screen and under the claim -- always controversial and often inflated -- that the bombings prevented an invasion and saved, and were designed to save, millions of American and Japanese lives.

History of Nations. This is a site which has a history of every nation on Earth. At least, every nation which is currently independent. (There is nothing on Welsh history for example.) This is an informative and easy to use site which I am sure I will be visitng from time to time. From the site: Welcome to History of Nations! This site has a history of every nation in the world. Each country if covered by a brief essay which gives the highlights of each nation's history.

The national histories at this site are divided into six regions.

Today, a doctor reflects on death and the machinery of sustaining life. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them.

Sherwin Nuland's book, How We Die, sat on my desk for a year. Now I've finally read it and it was a jolt. Nuland takes on the most forbidden topic of all. Society lets us talk about politics and sex as long as we're careful. But talk of death remains taboo.

Nuland is a surgeon and medical historian. His book deals with a primary dilemma. To be a doctor is to fight death. Yet death always wins in the end. Doctors, armed with spectacular new technologies, engage in a combat they cannot ultimately win. It is a situation that becomes more paradoxical all the time.

Nuland begins by explaining death itself. And it isn't pretty. Death is invariably caused by a lack of oxygen brought on by a hundred different scenarios of system failure. It is seldom a matter of passing gently over the Great Divide. In a harrowing sequence of chapters he explains how our bodies fail in heart disease, cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, and more.

For those of us old enough to know our time's limited, Nuland's book is frightening at first. But it grows reassuring as he demystifies death. He takes it out of that place where things go bump in the night. He puts it where it can be seen and understood.

He also deals with another seldom-discussed aspect of death. It is that the old usually reach a point where they accept it.

Nuland quotes Jefferson who, at 71, wrote to John Adams, then 78.
Our machines have been running seventy or eighty years and we must expect ... here a pivot, there a wheel, now a pinion, next a spring will be giving way; ...

There is a ripeness of time for death ... when it is reasonable we should drop off and make room for another growth.

But Nuland's main concern is with doctors and their machines, their compulsion to win the unwinable fight with death, their frequent inability to talk candidly with patients. He tells of the reflex need to fight for a patient's life long after there's any profit in it for the patient. He tells how he cheated his own brother of the chance to deal with his death by cancer. He offered empty hope instead of joining him in grieving the inevitable end.

In the poignant apogee of this remarkable book, Nuland quotes the hopeless words doctors tell each other when they fail to level with a patient: "I could not take away his hope." Then he adds,
Unless [we're] aware [we're] dying and ... know the conditions of our death, we [can't] share any sort of final consummation with those who love us. Without this consummation, no matter their presence at the hour of passing, we will remain unattended and isolated.

Others have certainly raised questions about the technologies of preserving life. But Nuland, coming from the very center of those technologies, tells us what every technologist in every field should understand. It is that we cannot let the objective purpose of our machines become ends in themselves. The true purpose of any machine can only be shaped by the people it is meant to serve.

In Chapter 1, "A Strangled Heart," Dr. Nuland relates his personal experience of an individual he chooses to call James McCarty. As noted in the Author's Note before Chapter 1, all but one name was changed in the stories the author will share. Dr. Nuland was in his third year of medical school and working an evening shift at a university hospital. Mr. McCarty had been admitted to the hospital after he experienced pressure in his chest and left side. James McCarty was the picture of an overweight workaholic who gave every indication of enjoying the good life in excess. He was admitted after experiencing severe pains and pressure in his chest and left side. His condition was evaluated as "recovering" and he was moved to a room for observation. The number of inquiries about the book has gone up lately, so although the press release hasn’t gone out yet and parts of the information on the book’s Amazon page are still being developed, I wanted to let you know.We’re hoping to get an international sales channel that would allow people outside the US to order online without having to pay so much postage, but not sure yet if that can happen.

I truly appreciate your readership here – the level of thoughtfulness that people have brought to these threads has been wonderful.The book covers the whole range of spiritual life and growth as broadly and deeply as I’ve been able to experience and understand it. It was written over a period of twenty-five years, starting from when I was leading a full life, through years of disease progression, and into severe disability – “in sickness and in heath,” as they say. (I guess I was sort of married to it…)

What’s a hippie? What’s the difference between an old hippie and a new hippie? Once a hippie, always a hippie? These and similar questions are the source of much debate today. New subcategories like web-hippies, cyber-hippies, even zippies have become fashionable. But what is a hippie and are you one? To answer this question, let’s see what defines a hippie. Some say it’s the way people dress, and behave, a lifestyle. Others classify drug users and rock 'n' roll fans or those with certain radical political views as hippies. The dictionary defines a hippie as one who doesn’t conform to society’s standards and advocates a liberal attitude and lifestyle. Can all these definitions be right?

It seems to me that these definitions miss the point. By focusing on the most visible behavioral traits these limited descriptions fail to reveal what lies in the hippie heart that motivates such behavior. To understand The Way of the Hippy, we must look at those circumstances that preceded the birth of the hippy movement, the important events that changed our lives, our resulting frustration with society, and the philosophy that developed from our spiritual maturation.

Hippy is an establishment label for a profound, invisible, underground, evolutionary process. For every visible hippy, barefoot, beflowered, beaded, there are a thousand invisible members of the turned-on underground. Persons whose lives are tuned in to their inner vision, who are dropping out of the TV comedy of American Life.

My view is that being a hippie is a matter of accepting a universal belief system that transcends the social, political, and moral norms of any established structure, be it a class, church, or government. Each of these powerful institutions has it’s own agenda for controlling, even enslaving people. Each has to defend itself when threatened by real or imagined enemies. So we see though history a parade of endless conflicts with country vs. country, religion vs. religion, class vs. class. After millennia of war and strife, in which uncounted millions have suffered, we have yet to rise above our petty differences.

The way of the hippie is antithetical to all repressive hierarchical power structures since these are adverse to the hippie goals of peace, love and freedom. This is why the “Establishment” feared and suppressed the hippie movement of the ’60s, as it was a revolution against the established order. It is also the reason why the hippies were unable to unite and overthrow the system since they refused to build their own power base. Hippies don’t impose their beliefs on others. Instead, hippies seek to change the world through reason and by living what they believe.

To be a hippie you must believe in peace as the way to resolve differences among peoples, ideologies and religions. The way to peace is through love and tolerance. Loving means accepting others as they are, giving them freedom to express themselves and not judging them based on appearances. This is the core of the hippie philosophy.

The hippy movement erected signposts for all to see. Some warn us of impending danger, others direct us towards richer, more fulfilling lives, but most show us the road to freedom. Freedom is the paramount virtue in this system. Freedom to do as one pleases, go where the flow takes you, and to be open to new experiences. This engenders an attitude that allows for maximum personal growth.

If you want to be free, be free, because there’s a million things to be.

Our society only permits you one or two weeks a year of freedom to pursue your own agenda. The rest of the time we are slaves to the system. Hippies reject the 9 to 5 lifestyle and therefore are objects of ridicule by those whose lives run by the clock. Programmed people are jealous and resent the freedom we possess. The unmitigated freedom that hippies represent is the greatest threat to any system in which control equals power.

I like ideas about the breaking away or overthrowing of established order. I am interested in anything about revolt, disorder, chaos, especially activity that seems to have no meaning. It seems to me to be the road towards freedom - external freedom is a way to bring about internal freedom.

With all this freedom comes a lot of responsibility. The system does not make it easy for us to survive without sacrificing our values. Therefore we must discover alternative ways to make a living without being a drag on our planet’s resources and our fellow humans. Hippies have pioneered numerous lifestyles and alternative businesses including communes, cooperatives, holistic medicine and health food. We focused everyone’s concern on the environment to highlight our responsibilities to our planet and to future generations.

Other beliefs that spring from our core philosophy are: an earthy spirituality such as a belief in Gaia (the earth as an organism), the Greens movement (political activism), even shamanism and vegetarianism. These philosophical and political views reflect a respect for nature and the planet as a whole, something lacking in our capitalistic and materialistic societies. The world needs hippies to point out alternatives to the entrenched system and warn of the impending disasters that await us if we don’t change our lifestyles. The goal is not to make everyone a hippie (what would we have to protest?). Rather we can try to influence others by example, through tolerance and love and teaching the virtues of the hippie way.

So being a hippie is not a matter of dress, behavior, economic status, or social milieu. It is a philosophical approach to life that emphasizes freedom, peace, love and a respect for others and the earth.

The way of the hippie never died. There have always been hippies from the first time society laid down rules, to Jesus, to Henry David Thoreau, to John Lennon, to you and me. I believe there’s a little hippy in all of us. It’s just been repressed by our socialization process. We need to find it and cultivate our hippie within. Only then can we reach our true potential.

— Jaideep Bose Narendra Jadhav’s father, a Class IV worker with the Bombay Port Trust, was semi-literate, his mother not even that. Jadhav grew up in a Mumbai slum, his formal education started at an unremarkable municipal school and culminated in a PhD in economics from a US university.

He rose to become chief economist and principal adviser at the Reserve Bank of India, and is now vice chancellor of Pune University—the same city where his dalit ancestors were forced to leave before sundown and sweep their own polluting shadow with a broom

Nirjharini Bhattacharjee swept the corridors of her school and cleaned the cups to pay her fees and feed her family. She was an exceptionally bright child and her teachers encouraged her to keep at her studies. She grew up to join Rishi Bankim College in Naihati, West Bengal, did her Master's, and cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET), qualifying as a lecturer. Today, she is principal of her college, and thinks nothing of picking up a broom or wiping the blackboard clean
E Balaguruswamy was born to a small farmer in a hard-up Tamil Nadu village. Their home had no electricity but it did have a precious supply of candles, which the young boy used up to study late into the night. He became vice-chancellor of Anna University, is currently a member of the Union Public Service Commission and the author of several best-selling books on software languages
Vilind Shah’s lot was similar to Balaguruswamy’s, only far worse. Born into an impoverished farming family in Amreli, Gujarat, he went blind at three, was sent to a special school and would probably have lost his way but for the kindness of a gentleman who noticed the boy’s potential and paid for him to go to college in Mumbai. Shah is now a professor of history at the University of Chicago
Vinayak Lohani went to IIM-Calcutta. When he graduated, he did not compete at placement interviews with blue-chip companies. Instead, he went out and opened a school for street children in Joka, where IIM-C has its campus, on the outskirts of Kolkata

A degree in engineering or medicine gives the child of a mill hand as much opportunity as any son or daughter of privilege.
At home and at work, chances are that your domestic help, driver, dhobi, liftman, watchman and peon are doing whatever it takes to send their children to an ‘English-medium’ school, buy them a second-hand computer, pay for their tuition, get them trained in IT. They dream of empowering their child with the kind of ambition they never dared have. And when the child excels in a board exam, gets into a big college or lands a good job, all those years of hardship and uncertainty melt away. In that defining moment there is a reinforcement of faith in the future—that it is possible to break the cycle of inequity by honourable means.
It is a well-worn cliche that ours is a country of glaring contradictions. Yes, we have one of the biggest education systems in the world—1.2 million schools, 6.3 million teachers and 290 million students, which in itself is more than the population of every country in the world except China, India and the US. And yes, literacy has grown from 28% in 1961 to 68% today. But the other end of the scale is crumbling. We still have over 287 million illiterate people (from the age of five)—the largest in any country, and larger than the population of Indians (five and above) at the time of Independence.
If India is today considered an emerging superpower and if the stereotype has shifted from snakecharmer to IT whiz, some of the credit must go to our education system, to our IITs and IIMs, and to grassroots initiatives like the midday meal scheme and the Navodaya Vidyalayas. This system has produced one of the world’s largest pools of science and tech graduates and created a robust middle class. And with well-educated Indians in influential positions in the developed world, notably the US, India has a voice that commands respect and attention on the global stage.
And yet, the many successes cannot hide the system’s sprawling underbelly. Millions of underprivileged youth have no access whatsoever to any form of schooling: of the 460 million between 6 and 24 years, 170 million are not in the education system
The drop-out rate is depressing: a staggering 90% don’t make it to college.
There are thousands of schools and colleges, both state-run and private, that provide no real education, and we don’t need empirical proof to bear this out. There is enough and more anecdotal evidence
There’s a massive deficit of teachers. And of the 4.7 million-odd who teach between classes I and VIII, almost half have not studied beyond senior secondary
Infrastructure is dismal: almost a third of primary and middle schools don’t have pucca buildings, 87% have no computers Ironically, our greatest source of strength is threatening to become our biggest weakness. Our education system is choking. Strategically, we are in danger of losing our global competitive advantage. Entrepreneurs have found that education is a great new business, and there’s nothing wrong with that so long as there is a genuine intent to provide quality education. But private education comes at a price, and the question is, can it reach children in slums and villages? If it can, can they afford it? The answer quite simply is no. As aspirations rise and disparities widen, and as the need for equity assumes even greater urgency, there is only one solution: to redeem the classroom.
For all of us at The Times of India, education is a near-obsessive priority. In many of our editions, we have more correspondents covering education than any other beat. We believe the time has now come for us to do more than just write about it. We think we can play a role in helping to bring education to the boy who in the pouring rain hawks pirated books at the street lights, the girl who runs after you with a bunch of roses she needs to sell before the day is out.
It is with a deep sense of mission that we are launching Teach India. There are thousands of good men and women who are doing exemplary work by teaching children who cannot afford a ‘good school’, children who survive on the brutal fringes of society, for whom living is a daily struggle and learning a luxury. We cannot even hope to equal their efforts.
What we hope to do, instead, is bring together those who want to make a difference and those already making a difference in education. So many of us genuinely want to give back to society and do something for the less fortunate. Many of us are doing things in our own limited, unorganised way by writing a cheque to an orphanage or paying the school fees of the house help’s child. But what if you want to go beyond the cheque book and give of your time as well? Are you faced with the dilemma of where to begin?
Teach India could be the answer. It taps into a powerful combination of urge and need. It seeks to put those of you who have the urge to lend a helping hand in touch with NGOs who work with underprivileged children and are in need of volunteers. It’s for you to decide what you would like to teach, and how much of your time you want to commit. And it is for the NGOs to decide the skills they require most.
Every survey has shown that an overwhelming majority of our readers belongs to the elite – technically termed SEC A, the highest socio-economic class. They have money; more importantly, they have had an education. What could be more satisfying than being able to share your knowledge and experience with children who may be wise beyond their years, but have never been taught how to write their name, or told why there is day and night, or why an apple falls to the ground instead of soaring to the sky? Do you think you can spare two hours a week — or even two hours a fortnight — to teach, to make a difference? You could be a college student, a bureaucrat, a doctor, a lawyer, an actor, an architect, a police officer, a pilot, a housewife, a retired professor. It doesn’t matter, as long as you take your commitment seriously. What’s more, we suspect it’ll be great fun—and you might end up learning a thing or two.
In the second phase of Teach India, which will unfold in a few months’ time, we will support a newly formed non-profit organisation, Teach For India, with board members such as Rajat Gupta, Anu Agha and Shaheen Mistry of Akanksha, to enlist some of the country’s brightest graduates who are willing to give two years of their lives to teaching underprivileged children. A similar program in the US called Teach For America (TFA) has been an astounding success. Today, students graduating from the most prestigious colleges vie to be accepted in this program, and TFA alumni have gone on to become influential voices in education policy in corporate America and in US administrations.
When we launched India Poised on the first day of the last year, we found that in vast swathes of our society, public governance—most worryingly, in education and health—was on the verge of collapse. Our Lead India campaign, which we rolled out on the sixtieth anniversary of our Independence, was born out of our belief that the country was in dire need of a clean and effective leadership. Lead India, we believe, struck a chord. (We are committed to the initiative and hope to carry the lessons of the first year into our next Lead India campaign.) In the course of our India Poised and Lead India campaigns, we have felt a growing need to focus on education, especially at the primary level, and among the underprivileged. Education has been a life-altering force for millions of Indians, and it will be our endeavour to bring the joys of learning to many more, and perhaps in the process, help level the playing field. The boy at the street lights could be a future vice chancellor, the girl with the roses could blossom into a principal. Think of how much joy it would give you to know that you played a part in making that happen. For all of us at The Times of India, an initiative such as this—which we hope will grow into a movement—gives us a meaning beyond ourselves, a greater purpose in life. We believe it’ll do the same for you.

He called it "reducing himself to zero," which entailed giving up unnecessary expenditure, embracing a simple lifestyle and washing his own clothes.[34] On one occasion he returned the gifts bestowed to him from the natals for his diligent service to the community.[35]
Gandhi spent one day of each week in silence. He believed that abstaining from speaking brought him inner peace. This influence was drawn from the Hindu principles of mauna (Sanskrit:???? — silence) and shanti (Sanskrit:????? — peace). On such days he communicated with others by writing on paper. For three and a half years, from the age of 37, Gandhi refused to read newspapers, claiming that the tumultuous state of world affairs caused him more confusion than his own inner unrest.

After reading John Ruskin's Unto This Last, he decided to change his lifestyle and create a commune called Phoenix Settlement.
Upon returning to India from South Africa, where he had enjoyed a successful legal practice, he gave up wearing Western-style clothing, which he associated with wealth and success. He dressed to be accepted by the poorest person in India, advocating the use of homespun cloth (khadi). Gandhi and his followers adopted the practice of weaving their own clothes from thread they themselves spun, and encouraged others to do so. While Indian workers were often idle due to unemployment, they had often bought their clothing from industrial manufacturers owned by British interests. It was Gandhi's view that if Indians made their own clothes, it would deal an economic blow to the British establishment in India. Consequently, the spinning wheel was later incorporated into the flag of the Indian National Congress. He subsequently wore a dhoti for the rest of his life to express the simplicity of his life.

“Art of Living has also backed out because Artie doesn’t want to do it for a social cause. It seems like a money-making racket. So we pulled out. We got an email from Artie, who soon after his return to the US from India, showed disinterest in doing it the ‘social cause’ way. He said he was living off his girlfriend’s money and wanted to make some money out of the concert. This beat the whole purpose.We immediately gave up the idea,” says Suryaveer Singh, who had 19% stake in the company Full Circle formed to back the project. The other stake holder and organiser Lalit Bhatnagar, however, rubbishes the rumours saying things are going in the right direction. According to him, the project is still on and Art of Living is very much a part of it. “Sri Sri Ravishankar is in the US and might be even meeting Artie for further discussions. People have quit the project due to personal reasons,” he confirms.As far as the Goa Woodstock goes, it’s all a hoax according to Lalit. There are also groups on Facebook and other sites about the impending concert in Goa, which Lalit says is untrue and that the Bangalore festival is slotted for end of this year. Incidentally, Shillong is also being considered as the venue. The rift has left the people who quit the project with a feeling of betrayal. “We were the ones who put Lalit and Artie in touch with Art of Living,” rues Suryaveer. what is GOA ?

What for the hippies flower-power was, is for the techno generation "Goa". A term borrowed from the portuguese colony in India where these parties originally began, and to some extent still continue. Nowadays the parties occur all over the world, with specific centres where they are more or less popular. In north Germany there is a large following, some 20 thousand or so, with the largest of the group around Hamburg. There are also smaller groups across the whole of Germany, the smallest of these in the South. Not many people are required to make party viable - wherever there are enough people to cover the costs of at least one DJ and the hire of sound equipment and venue. The size of parties varies enormously. From very small private/birthday events for 100 to annual "happenings", "gatherings" and "festivals" of up to 10,000. It isn't possible to give figures on the size of attendances - reliable information is simply not obtainable. As a general guide in our party info it can be taken from the number of DJs in the lineup, especially when a larger number of professional DJs are included, that the party is of the larger variety.
Psy-Trance is an absorbing form of repetitive beat music to which certain melodic and accoustic sounds are blended or are performed live in addition. Some of these sounds stem from exotic instruments, such as sittahs, gongs, drums and didgereedoos. Unlike other forms of techno music there is little by way of verbal addition, although some samples are derived from the human mouth. There are no songs or anthems (as with House) or repetitive speech elements (such as with Rap). Trance music is designed to increase and decrease in the higher frequencies in waves which ebb and flow, leading the dancer to repeated ecstatic peaks. To some it is a form of meditation. To some merely a way to work off a bit of winter fat. The dancers are extremely social and gentle with one another. If anyone else is accidentally touched or trodden upon there follow hearty apologies, or sometimes just a gesture, the palms pressed together in a prayer position, the traditional Indian greeting. Many Osho/Bhagwan followers (sanyassins) go to the parties and contribute their particular sexual and philosophical thinking to it. Osho advised certain dances as a form of meditation, as did Gurdgieff with his spiritual and ritualistic dances, drawn from the traditions of the whirling dervishes.
Dancing to trance is a very personal and individual experience. No advice is given or to be expected and experiences vary according to the background and outlook of the individual "trancer" him/herself. No common philosophy appears to exist amongst the dancers - most of the sayings, rituals and thinking at parties seems borrowed rather than adopted. Images of "Shiva" or "Krishna" may often be found in parties but most seem unaware as to what they actually are or what their significance is. These images are simply "used" to lend flavour to the party and not hallowed as something sacred. As is the use of tippees, totem poles, pyramids and runes. They merely provide atmosphere and carry no further meaning. Certain similarities in social approach can be perceived amongst the people and these are the hallmark of trance parties - the gentleness and respect, the chance to dance unmolested (this is especially noted by the women), the smiles and feelings of joy.
I have often been asked to describe the difference between a "rave" and a "trance party". Ravers dance to fast and furious beats until they are completely exhausted. Generally such parties are frequented by the younger set, teenage through early twenties, and are accompanied by a large consumption of chemicals which stimulate fast dancing such as "speed". Trancers, on the other hand, tend to be older on average, although a wide age range is common, from older teens to grandfathers. It's a question of outlook of the person. I know many 50-something trancers who dance as hard and as long as the younger ones, and bring a certain air of mysticism and experience to the party. Raves are generally organised by commercial undertakings and are advertised and reported on in the press and on TV and Radio. Trance parties are generally organised by ordinary people, a small group of DJs and helpers who expect little in remuneration and the parties are rarely advertised or reported upon in the press (some reports exhibit total surprise and call the scene "neo-hippy" or "techno" and attempt to compare it with things such as the Berlin "Love Parade" or even "Woodstock"). The Trance parties are therefore something special and wish to remain underground. They are a grass-roots welling-up of a new format for open air festivals. North Germans are indeed lucky to have so many such parties to choose from during their short but extremely colourful summer.
The elements of an open air trance party in Germany (in no particular order)1. Soundsystem with a surround (4 speaker) effect. Normally enlosed by circle of staves to determine the dance area proper. Sometimes this area is surrounded by a ring of tippees - which is popular.2. Some kind of booth, stage or shack where the DJs can spin without being bumped by dancers.3. A chillout area, offering carpeted areas under makeshift "tent" material (normally using brightly coloured indian/asian printed hangings and not very waterproof) complete with someone offering chai (spiced tea with ginger) and light snacks.4. An adequate carpark where the people can setup tents, barbecues or whatever they need to feel at a kind of home-from-home for the duration of the gathering.5. An assortment of private traders selling everything from imported asian fabrics and clothing, jewelery, records, tapes and CDs and the sort of stuff one finds in a headshop. Sometimes this is called the "hippy market" area, and can spread around a large area.6. A bar/tent (in Germany a lot of beer is drunk at any event, regardless of how spiritual the premises of the party). Sometimes there are alternative drinks available too such as "smart drinks" and guarana mixes from private traders.7. Trance-DJs, of course. Otherwise it wouldn't be a trance party.8. Lots of colour - particularly neon which glows under ultra violet light, of which there is always a lot too! The "deko" (decoration) of parties is often undertaken by struggling artists who paint large pictures on fabric specifically designed to be hung at a series of parties.9. Flyers are distributed in parties, also magazines such as the Mushroom and the KERNEL Goa Infoblatt.10. Of course there is also a lot of dancing too...

In the late 1960s, strange-looking beings with long, scraggly hair, blue jeans, colorful clothes and beads started showing up on the doorsteps of churches. Most of the churches were like Dylan's Mr. Jones. There was something happening but they didn't know what it was.
It was the "Jesus Movement." God was moving in an unexpected, unusual, and totally groovy way. The hippie counterculture that had brought us LSD, the "Summer of Love," "free love," Woodstock, and Altamont, was turning on to Jesus in large numbers. It was another one of the surprises God springs on His church from time to time!
It all started in 1967, when the "Living Room," the first Christian coffeehouse, was opened in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury by some hippies who had discovered Jesus. The Word of God spread like wildfire among the "street people" who were trying all kinds of spirituality. Soon there were Christian coffeehouses, counseling centers, and communes all over California and the rest of the country, from Sunset Strip to Washington, DC.
Many churches saw that God was doing something and welcomed the "Jesus People." Pastor Chuck Smith was one of the first to welcome long-hairs and ex-dopers to his "little country church" in Orange County. Calvary Chapel became an epicenter of the Jesus movement earthquake. Many other churches, like the Church on the Way, Peninsula Bible Church in San Francisco, and Christ Church of Washington turned on to the Jesus Movement in a big way. Jesus people also spawned the Vineyard and scads of house churches and contributed to the growth of the charismatic renewal movement in mainline churches.
The Jesus people brought their music with them when they came to church. Larry Norman sang, "Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?" Drums, guitars, amplifiers and backbeats freaked out a lot of people who thought the organ was the only instrument God allowed in a church building. Jesus freaks took their rock'n'roll, rewrote the words, and went on the road to broadcast the gospel to the counterculture. By the early 1970's bands playing Christian music and sharing their testimonies were all over the place. Dudes like Larry Norman, Love Song, Second Chapter of Acts, Phil Keaggy, Randy Stonehill, the Resurrection Band, and countless others were playing coffeehouses, nightclubs, churches, and Jesus festivals.
By the early '70s, the movement had bubbled over and made its mark on pop culture. Dozens of books and magazine articles told the strange tale of how Jesus captured the hippies. Pop music started featuring spiritual themes--Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, "Spirit in the Sky", "Put Your Hand in the Hand of the Man from Galilee," "My Sweet Lord" were all hits. Larry Norman sang, "Last year we looked at Jesus from afar; this year He's a superstar" ("Readers Digest").
Jesus People also put their music to work in worshiping God. Guitars started showing up in Catholic "folk masses" in the 60s, and by the 70s they were a staple in Young Life and other youth group meetings. A whole canon of guitar-based worship songs started to come together, led by the Maranatha series. What a trip!
The Jesus Movement opened the way for all sorts of changes in the way we do church today. It spawned a whole "Contemporary Christian Music" genre. In most of today's churches, guitars, drums, big sound systems and worship choruses are in, and not many people even remember how to play an organ or sing in a choir. Worship services are more informal, "seeker-sensitive," and people are showing up at church in shorts and tennis shoes, trends that were all made possible by the Jesus Movement.

Jesus Hippy ?

There is no character more openly despised by the mainstream of American culture than the "dirty hippy". All you have to do is check out one of the many websites directed against them to verify this observation right from your desktop.

Among Christians, the "dirty hippy" is often thought to be the anti-type of the follower of Christ. Lazy, unsuccessful, a slacker, a scoffer, a sinner who does drugs and has sex indiscriminately, someone who listens to the devil's rock and roll music; ask and many evangelical Christians will tell you: the hippy is hell-bound.

Now, when compared to hippies, we Christians have an image in America that is ultra clean cut. The image people have of us is shockingly like the T.V. show the The Simpsons' cartoon parody of the Christian, Ned Flanders. We are thought to be clean cut, gainfully employed, "clean" mouthed, simplemindedly gullible, little house-holders with nice fences and neat lawns. Christians are mostly known as law abiding, tax-paying, clean-living, moralistic, judgmental, suburban and rural people.

We do nothing to dispel these images; if anything, the American Christians are invisible, living comfortably in an increasingly homogeneous suburban culture, conforming ourselves in every respect to a life-style that demands a certain customary behavior pattern. In turn, we rigidly demand everyone's obedience to that same pattern of behavior. The "dirty hippy" just doesn't fit in, and why should he?

You can also create your own custom backup sets based on rules that you create. The old fashioned method of selecting specific files and/or folders is an option as well.

Say something bad happens. How do I restore my data?
There are three ways to restore your data:
The first restore option is to simply right-click on the file or folder that you want to restore and select "Restore Previous Version." You can then select the version to restore, from the most recent version up to 30 days back.

The second restore option is to restore via the Mozy Virtual Drive. You can find this when you open up "My Computer" on your machine and select the Mozy icon from the "other" category.
The third restore option is to restore via the web. Go to the Restore page, login and select the computer and time/date you want to restore data from. Here, you are able to select all the data you want to restore.

The choice is then yours as to how you would prefer to receive your data. You can choose to retrieve your restore via download or, for a fee, have it shipped to you burned on DVD. Make your selection, and the restoration process will begin.

If you choose the free web restore, it could take a few minutes or a few hours for Mozy to prepare the data for you depending on how large the restore is. You will be notified by email when your restore is ready to download. When you get the email, go to your Account page and from there you can download your restored data.

How often can I restore my data?
As many times as you need to. MozyHome users are limited to one restore queued at a time, though multiple files may be requested within the restore.

What is backup, according to Mozy?
You can think of it in the same way you think of a backup copy of a paper document—that is, if you lose the working copy of the paper document, you go find the backup copy. In other words, the primary copy of your files or data will be maintained as the working copy on your machine.
If you delete the working copy on your machine and then run a backup, Mozy will assume that you no longer need a backup copy, since you got rid of the working copy, and will mark the file to be removed from our system in 30 days. (We keep it on file for 30 days, just in case you change your mind.) After 30 days, you cannot get these files back.

If you want Mozy to keep the files after they are deleted from your computer, this is referred to as an archiving service and is currently not offered. If you have suggestions for us on how you would like to see us implement an archiving service, email support@mozy.com

How can I view the status of my backup?
Double-click on the MozyHome tray icon and it will give you an idea of how your backup is progressing.

Are there any size limits or other constraints to the types of files I can back up?
You can back up pretty much any type or size of file. However, a few operating-system specific files can't be backed up, like the pagefile or prefetch files on Windows.

Can I share my backed-up data with another user?
No. Mozy is not a file sharing service—it's a backup service. While you can technically give your name and password to someone to access your backups, we strongly advise you not to share your password. (Unless, of course, you already share a toothbrush—then it's probably not a big deal to share a password.)

I use the free version of MozyHome, so what happens if I fill up my quota? Is there any way to get more?
If you are using the free version, MozyHome will stop backing up your data once you reach your quota and the MozyHome tray icon will be shown in error mode. You can fix this by opening your MozyHome client and deselecting some items so the amount of data you are backing up falls below your quota.

The easier thing is to upgrade to MozyHome Unlimited for just $4.95 per month here, and back up all of your home computer's data!

How many files can I back up?
MozyHome Free accounts are restricted to 2 GB, but there’s no limit with MozyHome Unlimited. You can back up as many files as you can fit on your home computer. Just note that the more files you back up, the longer your initial backup will take. MozyPro even offers the capability of backing up network or mapped drives for more flexibility.

I have LOTS of data. How long will it take to back up?
For a typical system on a typical broadband line, Mozy backs up data at about 2-4 GB per day. But if left undisturbed on a fast connection, you can back up over 9 GB in a single day.
You may experience faster or slower speeds depending on your connection. You may want to check your favorite bandwidth meter test to measure your broadband connection. Here is one from Speakeasy that we like to use. You will be uploading to the Mozy servers when you back up, so pay attention to the "Upload" part of the test results.

Will it take that long next time?
Mozy does what are called differential backups, which means that it only backs up portions of your files that have changed since the last time they were backed up. This saves lots of time, bandwidth, and storage space. After your initial backup, subsequent backups are relatively quick, and chances are that you won't even notice them.

What if my internet connection disconnects while Mozy's backing up? Or what if I shut off my computer in the middle of the backup?
That's not a problem. Mozy will just continue where it left off next time you are online.

How do I cancel my Mozy account?
Uninstall the application from your desktop, and then log on to your account at Mozy.com. Under "My profile," select "delete account," and your account will be cancelled. All of your information will be completely deleted from Mozy's databases within 24 hours.

Will Mozy back up my entire disk drive? What about my applications and system files?
Mozy was made to back up your most important files (email, contacts, photos, financials, etc.), but not your system and application files, which are easy to restore via your original CDs.
Technically, you can back up your applications and system files, but we don't advise this. This is done for what's called a "bare metal restore," which is not what Mozy was designed to do. Typically, if your computer dies, you get new hardware, and attempting to just image your new computer with your old disk image via Mozy (or any other backup application for that matter) is a tricky endeavor. If you are ambitious, you are welcome to give it a shot, but it's not something we recommend or support.

How does Mozy keep my data from being lost?
We utilize a proprietary protection mechanism based on a complex encoding structure to ensure that your data is safe, even in the event of multiple hardware failures.

Does MozyHome support network drives? What about external drives?
MozyHome does not support network drives, but if the network drive is part of a server running Windows, then you can install Mozy onto that server and back up the shared drive locally. If the network drive is running on Windows Server 2003 or 2000, check out http://mozy.com/pro.
MozyHome does support most types of external drives (excluding thumbdrives), but only if Windows sees your external drive as "fixed."

Please note that if you unplug or turn off your drive while your computer is running, MozyHome will see that the files are gone and deselect them from your backup.

It’s nice to have you visit the site. This site is meant to facilitate flow of information on the responses coming out of Right to Information applications. A lot of dedicated RTI activists and individual applicants work hard at finding information on crucial public matters. But are then able to share that information with a limited number of people only. Some of the notable RTIs get covered in the media but only in excerpts.

This site will allow people to upload both their initial applications to a government authority as also the response that they get. Many a time the response may be voluminous and so we are still working on how sharing of that information may be facilitated. Excerpts of the information can be uploaded in the interim.

A very helpful feature of the site will be the facility to comment on individual applications and responses. Thus a discussion could facilitate a future course of action. We will be adding useful features where possible along the way.

A Naval officer of the Royal Navy remembers

On 14 May, 1948, the Jewish People's Council met at the Tel Aviv Museum and publicly declared the establishment of the State of Israel. The Jews had campaigned long and hard and had suffered immeasurably, for this day to become a reality. Through the whole process, they had met with friends and foes alike. They had been helped by those sympathetic to their cause, and had also been betrayed by some of these.

They had been aggressively opposed by their enemies and were on the extermination list of Satan and his cohorts. Israel by the help of God, miraculously survived through overwhelming odds to emerge as a nation in her own right. The drive for the restoration of the Jewish homeland began in 1897 when the first Zionist Congress was convened in Basel, Switzerland by the spiritual father of the Jewish State, Theodor Herzl. Since then, active Zionists ceaselessly worked to help bring this dream and conviction to fruition. The first aliya or mass immigration of Jews took place in 1882-1903, the Jews hailing mainly from Russia. Another aliya took place in the years 1904-14, when Jews again from Russia, fled the pogroms (organized massacres) inspired by the Russian government. These Jews settled in Palestine and founded the first kibbutz (collective farm) and the first modern all-Jewish city, Tel Aviv in 1909. In those years, Palestine was still under the control of Turkey. Turkey however lost control of Palestine to the British during the First World War.
Meanwhile over in Great Britain during the ending years of World War 1, God was moving. Right there in the British Cabinet were men who had been brought up on the Bible and who were favourably disposed towards the concept of the formation of a Jewish homeland for the millions of Jews worldwide. One of them, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arthur James Balfour was instrumental in promoting the Jewish cause and on November 2, 1917, Balfour issued a historic letter called the Balfour Declaration which pledges British support for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The letter was presented to the head of the Zionist Federation in Great Britain, Lord Rothschild.
Several reasons have been cited for the Balfour Declaration, some political and one which involved a Zionist scientist called Chaim Weizmann who had helped the British in their war effort by developing a process to synthesize acetone, an ingredient used in making powerful explosives. The discovery at that time was like that of the atomic bomb during World War 2, for it gave the Allied Forces a decisive edge over their opponents. Whatever were the reasons, we know that it was the hand of God who had moved events and key people to bring about His purpose in these last days. Chaim Weizmann later became the first President (1948-52) of the new State of Israel.
With the Balfour Declaration, more Jews were encouraged to return to their ancient homeland. From 1919-23, the third aliya took place. In 1920, the Haganah, the Jewish defense organization was founded. Britain was given the Mandate for Palestine in 1922 by the League of Nations. By a twist of events, the land east of the River Jordan which had earlier been marked out as land for the development of Jewish agriculture, was handed over to Abdullah, the grandfather of Jordan's present King Hussein and was named Transjordan by Winston Churchill. Churchill also promised eventual independence for this new territory of Transjordan (took place in 1946). Thus, Israel lost this piece of land, which had been the inheritance of the Reubenites, the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh.
In 1928, there were changes in the British government and Britain began to compromise on the Balfour Declaration as they were also in need of Arab oil. The Arabs began to incite violence against the Jews in Palestine and bloodshed began in 1929. The Jews, not permitted to arm themselves, had their Haganah go underground. Finally, in 1939, Britain issued the White Paper which severely limited Jewish immigration to the Promised land to a mere 15,000 per year for 5 years, after which it had to stop. This was a blatant reversal of the Balfour Declaration given 22 years earlier.
The stage was set for another great calamity on earth, the Second World War (1939-45). Within 6 months of the White Paper, Britain was plunged into the World War. The Jews struggling to survive, faced the most horrid period of their lives. Satan was all set to wipe them off the face of the earth and to prevent the rebirth of the Jewish nation. The Holocaust, born in the mind of a demonically inspired Hitler, started in Europe and by the end of the War, it had claimed 6 million Jewish lives, equivalent to one-third of the total Jewish world population. The fury of Satan unleashed in the horrifying tortures and massacres of the Jews, however served only to promote and to expedite the Jewish cause. Satan's plan backfired. The Jews worldwide were convinced more than ever that they needed a homeland of their own in the midst of an anti-Semitic hostile world. World opinion also swung in favour of the Jews as world leaders, liberal Christians and others alike recovered from the shock of the Holocaust.
The United Nations was formed at the end of World War 2 and on November 29, 1947, the UN proposed that the land of Palestine be partitioned into Arab and Jewish states. The resolution was accepted by the Jews but rejected by the Arabs. The British Mandate (British rule) was due to end on May 14, 1948 and Palestine would be on its own after that. The Jews knew that their hour had come. The odds were against them. The Arab nations stood posed to drive them into the Mediterranean Sea should they take the step to declare their nationhood. They were advised to delay the announcement until they had built up their military strength. Here is what David Ben-Gurion, who later became Israel's first Prime Minister, said,
'Here then was the counsel of a friend and the military appreciation of our situation by one of the world's outstanding soldiers. On the face of it, such advice could not be dismissed lightly. Yet it could not deflect us from our chosen course. For Marshall (the adviser) could not know what we knew -- what we felt in our very bones: that this was our historic hour; if we did not live up to it, through fear or weakness of spirit, it might be generations or even centuries before our people were given another historic opportunity -- if indeed we would be alive as a national group.'
The Jews were resolved to proceed with their declaration. And this they did on that historic day, placing their trust in the Almighty. The United States and the then USSR both recognized the new State of Israel and Israel was admitted into the United Nations as a full member.
The next day, May 15, 1948, the Arabs attacked. Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Transjordan and Lebanon swept into the tiny fledgling nation from all fronts. The Arab armies were well equipped with the latest British and French fighters and bombers, tanks, heavy artillery, bombs and ammunition. The Jewish State however was a sorry contrast. Israel at that time had no regular army but some semi-autonomous paramilitary groups, each having their own command and agenda. They had no tanks, no military planes, no artillery and only 10000 rifles! And a will to survive. About 3600 Jewish and non-Jewish volunteers from about 29 different countries, battle-hardened and experienced from World War 2, men and women, responded to help Israel in her hour of greatest need. They came secretly into the country and were assigned to their units in the newly formed IDF, Israel Defence Forces. These volunteers were called the Machal.
Israel scoured the world for military equipment left over from World War 2 and had them secretly shipped to their country. They bought desperately needed military planes and other equipment and much needed supplies from some willing sellers and were charged highly for them. All these were ferried into Israel in clandestine operations and some of the pilots and air crew lost their lives or were captured by hostile governments in the process.
The IDF fought courageously for about a month and a truce was called by the United Nations on June11, 1948. The fighting resumed on July 9 and by January 7, 1949, the Arabs called for a cease-fire. The Jews had managed to arm themselves and with the help and the expertise of the volunteers, many of them in the Air Force and the Navy, they fought a winning war and the Arabs finally withdrew. The War of Independence was over, one of Israel's costliest and the most decisive war. The Arabs had no choice but to co-exist side by side with Israel.
Today, the State of Israel has about 4.7 million Jews which is about 36% of World Jewry as compared to 84,000 in 1922. The purposes of God can never be thwarted, no matter how hard Satan tries. Though Israel had been judged for their idolatries during the Divided Kingdom era and had been dispersed to the nations, God promised to bring them back to their land before the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ (Eze 36:24, Matt 24:32-33). Israel is the fig tree, which the Lord instructed His disciples to observe as a sign of His coming (Jer 24:5-7). Today, the fig tree is established and the nation Israel is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year for the 50th year is the year of Jubilee (Lev 25:10).
Israel is certainly one of the main guideposts to watch for the unfolding of God's plan and we must continue to be watchful for the Lord will surely come, at an hour we are not aware of. So let us keep our ears tuned to news from Israel.

Hamas resists Israel recognition

Hamas says all of Israel is built on occupied Palestinian land

Rival Palestinian political factions Fatah and Hamas have reached agreement on a common political strategy to try to end a damaging power struggle.

However, Hamas negotiators have denied earlier reports that the deal meant the militants would implicitly recognise Israel - a major policy shift.
The full text of the accord has not yet been released. A Hamas minister said it did not have "one word" on the issue.
The deal comes amid heightened tension over the capture of an Israeli soldier.
Israeli tanks and troops have massed on the border and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has warned that a large scale military operation is rapidly approaching.
Palestinian statehood
Palestinian minister Abdel Rahman Zeidan told the BBC the Hamas-Fatah document did not in any way recognise the state of Israel.

'No room for Jewish state'
The BBC's James Reynolds in Gaza says that the central point of the joint manifesto is the creation of a Palestinian state on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
Traditionally that is one half of a two-state solution, but the existing drafts of the deal make no mention of the second half of this solution - the state of Israel.
This omission is deliberate, our correspondent says.
While some have argued that this means Hamas tacitly accepts Israel's right to exist, it is becoming clear that that is not how Hamas sees it.

Hamas' Ismail Haniya has yet to reveal details of the deal
Hamas negotiators have told the BBC that the entire state of Israel has been built on occupied Palestinian land.
They believe that a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza is a first step - not a final step.
They believe that future generations of Palestinians will reclaim all their historic homeland. And that, in the end, there will be no room for what is now the Jewish state of Israel, our correspondent says.
Mr Zeidan did say, however, that the Palestinian factions had agreed that the Palestinian state would be established inside the 1967 borders - and to delegate Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas "to negotiate with Israel on an agreement, a peace agreement".

According to Israeli media reports officials believe he was injured in the stomach and hand during the attack near Kerem Shalom.
Difficult choice
On Monday three Palestinian militant groups demanded the release of Palestinian women and youths being held in Israeli jails in return for news of the captured soldier.
Ramallah resident Walid al-Houdaly, whose wife and 18-month-old child are in an Israeli jail, told the BBC News website that he backed those calls:

Israel says time is running out before it moves to free Shalit
"There is one soldier, but there have been hundreds of Palestinians kidnapped from their houses," he said.
Speaking to the BBC on Tuesday, Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Mark Regev said that the release of Cpl Shalit must be immediate and unconditional.
"The state of Israel does not negotiate with terrorists," Mr Regev insisted. "Unless he is released it is our moral obligation as a government to take action to free him."
Intense diplomatic efforts have been under way since the soldier's disappearance, including mediation by an Egyptian delegation in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli leader must choose between going ahead with military action that would endanger the life of the captured soldier or risk being seen as weak, says the BBC's Jon Leyne in Jerusalem.
And the Hamas-led Palestinian government must decide whether they are really willing to go into a full-scale confrontation with the Israelis which could have disastrous consequences.

Blogs and Blogging: Advantages and Disadvantages

Isn't it interesting that some of the most significant 'revolutions' of the last twenty years have all had to do with writing?

How retro is that? First we had email, then webpages, then mobile phone texting, and now blogs. All this reflects a trend whereby the world is becoming more formal in how it communicates. Instead of body language and endless conversations, communication has shifted towards endless words on a screen.

Bloggers are people with attitude. They say there's a book inside everybody. Well, the Web and blogs have let the book out! There has literally been an explosion of opinion. Traditionally, public relations was about honing a silvery message that communicated exactly what the organization wanted us to hear. Now, we can hear all sorts of voices on the subject. It's true democracy at work.

The advantages of blogs from an organizational perspective include the following:
1) The consumer and citizen are potentially better informed and this can only be good for the long-term health of our societies and economies.
2) Blogs have potential to help the organization develop stronger relationships and brand loyalty with its customers, as they interact with the 'human face' of the organization through blogs.
3) Blogs, in an intranet environment, can be an excellent way of sharing knowledge within the organization.
4) Blogs can be a positive way of getting feedback, and keeping your finger on the pulse, as readers react to certain pieces, suggest story ideas, etc.
5) Blogs can build the profile of the writer, showcasing the organization as having talent and expertise.

The disadvantages of blogs are:
1) Most people don't have very much to say that's interesting, and/or are unable to write down their ideas in a compelling and clear manner.
2) I have often found that the people who have most time to write have least to say, and the people who have most to say don't have enough time to write it. Thus, the real expertise within the organization lays hidden, as you get drowned in trivia.
3) Like practically everything else on the Web, blogs are easy to start and hard to maintain.

Writing coherently is one of the most difficult and time-consuming tasks for a human being to undertake. So, far from blogs being a cheap strategy, they are a very expensive one, in that they eat up time. As a result, many blogs are not updated, thus damaging rather than enhancing the reputation of the organization.

4) Organizations are not democracies. The Web makes many organizations look like disorganizations, with multiple tones and opinions. Contrary to what some might think, the average customer prefers it if the organization they are about to purchase from is at least somewhat coherent.

There's money in words; real value, real worth. I'm not a blogger but I do have this newsletter and I can tell you that these 500 or so words that I publish every week have seen a major return on investment for me.

As an individual, I would highly recommend that you have some sort of publishing strategy, whether it be a blog, newsletter, writing articles for magazines, website or whatever. This is an age where you will build your professional reputation word by word. Start off by finding something people care about and that you care about.

The whispers of romance are particularly scurrilous because Mr Putin has not officially announced any separation from his 50-year-old wife, Ludmilla.

But the former KGB spy, known for keeping his private life as far out of the spotlight as his former career, is reported to have split from her two months ago.
Rumours of Mr Putin's courtship of the rhythmic gymnast champion and model, who is now a member of the Russian parliament, have been circulating unofficially for some time.

Born in 1983, in Tashkent, now the capital of Uzbekistan, she was reportedly a late starter as an athlete, but progressed swiftly due to her "extreme natural flexibility".
Her physical attributes, much prized in the rhythmic gymnastic world, have seen her clinch several medals. She represented Russia at both the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games.
Her interests appear not to be limited purely to the sporting arena. She has posed for daring photographs wrapped in nothing but furs and has appeared in an action film.

Despite increasingly frantic rumours of a wedding, apparently to take place on June 15 in Mr Putin's home town of St Petersburg, the Kremlin has so far refused to comment.

The 25-minute meeting, believed to be the first time a pope has met with victims of sexual abuse by the clergy, took place in the chapel of the Vatican's embassy and was kept secret until after it was over.

The encounter dramatically capped three days of comments the pope has made expressing shame about the scandal that has rocked the U.S. Church.

"They prayed with the Holy Father, who afterward listened to their personal accounts and offered them words of encouragement and hope," a Vatican statement said. "His holiness assured them of his prayers for their intentions, for their families and for all victims of sexual abuse."

Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the archbishop of Boston, the city where the scandal first broke in 2002, accompanied the group, which a Vatican source said was made up of about a half a dozen middle-aged men and women.

Chief Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said there was a lot of emotion in the room and some of the victims cried. Each victim then chatted personally with the pope.
Benedict spoke "affectionate words" to the group and Cardinal O'Malley gave the pope a notebook with the names of about 1,000 sexual abuse victims in the Boston archdiocese, so that the pope could pray for all of them, Lombardi said.

Dear all,
Over the last few days I have received several requests not to participate in the Olympic Torch Relay. Requests through members of my family, personal friends, people who are associated with the Tibetan struggle, and my blog. I have gone through and read each and every letter, message and post pertaining to this issue. I would like to state that I have the highest regard and respect for the struggle that the people of Tibet are going through. I completely empathize with them. Similarly, I have the highest respect and regard for the struggle that the people of Iraq, Kashmiri Pundits who have been displaced, Kashmiris in general, and the people of Palestine, are going through.

I have named above just a few instances of human rights violations. Across the world, and indeed within our own country too, there are several instances and examples of atrocities and human rights violation, which are still continuing. I categorically state that I am absolutely against any form of violence, and certainly I am deeply upset whenever the basic rights of human beings are violated anywhere in the world.

However, I feel that the Olympic Games do not belong to China. In fact if we were to try and find on this planet a place to hold the Olympic Games where the government of that place has not been responsible for human rights violations (in one way or the other), then I suspect that we would be left with very few options, if any at all. If I am not mistaken almost all societies have been responsible for human rights violation either directly or indirectly, sometimes in seen ways and sometimes in unseen ways, sometimes physically, sometimes economically.

The Olympic Games represent for me the coming together of different people across the world despite their differences and difficulties. It is an opportunity for sportsmen and women across the world to showcase their talent, to challenge themselves and others, and for others to watch and marvel at the achievements of the human body, mind and soul. Are human rights violations continuing across the globe while all this is happening. I’m afraid so.

And I hope and pray for the day that we can one day live in absolute peace and harmony, where human suffering is done away with. I am no one to tell any group of people how they should conduct their struggle. I am not part of it and am not going through what they are going through. But my heart goes out to them.

I request those of you who have asked me to stay away from the Olympic Torch Relay to understand that when I do run with the torch on the 17th of April it is not in support of China. In fact it will be with a prayer in my heart for the people of Tibet, and indeed for all people across the world who are victims of human rights violations.

The finale of Miss India 2008 is the hottest thing to hit television this April. Months of hard work, barely any food and treacherous workouts will finally pay off for a few of them, if not all. It will also buy them 60 minutes of fame! Beauty pageants are about being “beautiful”, right? Since when did being beautiful come with height, weight and age criteria? Oh yes – since time immemorial.

While we can grudgingly agree that Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai in their own way helped put India on the global map, what has stumped most people is the spillover of the wannabe Ash-Sush effect over the years. Every beauty queen says she wants to do something about poverty, children, AIDS and the lesser mortals of the world. How many of them really do it, though? This kind of answers might win them the crown, but then, what next? Don’t you think this in itself is a farce?

Most of these beauty queens go on to become actresses and don’t really keep up their promises of making a difference to this world. With the TRP ratings for these shows falling with every passing year, what purpose do these contests really serve, then, if not adding to an already under-talented and over-populated film industry?

Do these contests really bring out the beauty of a person? As Praxis questions, do these pageants do anything more than portray women as mere objects? Do you think we are pushing in an anorexia culture? Do such shows really bring forth women of substance, Answerers?

Many years ago I wrote a book about my life, which was, necessarily, in large part a book about my life in Hollywood. More recently I decided that I wanted to write a book about life. Just life itself. What I've learned by living more than seventy years of it. Quite the contrary, I began this book as an exploration, an exercise in self-questioning. In other words, I wanted to find out, as I looked back at a long and complicated life, with many twists and turns, how well I've done at measuring up to the values I espouse, the standards I myself have set.Writers of a spiritual or metaphysical persuasion often convey their message through storytelling. They illustrate their points with parables drawn from great teachers of the past, whether it be Jesus of Nazareth, or Buddha, or the latest Arabic sage or Sufi mystic—the more exotic the better. Some take this natural tendency to great lengths, writing whole books devoted to finding the deep wisdom embedded in ancient folk tales, psychologically complex stories drawn from Africa, Scandinavia, East Asia, Latin America, and many other far-flung countries. They do this, it seems, to get as far away as possible from our contemporary mindset so that we can see modern, digitized, postindustrial life as if through new eyes (or, perhaps, through very ancient, very grounded eyes).

History seems to attract so much debate in India that possibly no one wants to talk about it. Devadasis form a part of our history. A part, that we seem to be ashamed to admit. Discussing something like this is just not done in good company. English-speaking society in India has painted devadasis as prostitutes. Governments are committed to abolition of this “evil” practice, which according to general impression was a cover for religious prostitution. Naturally, the civil society of urban India would rather like to forget this dark footnote to Indian history or in some cases use it to just attack the “uncivilized barbaric non-religion” called Hinduism.
No one else in history seems to have been as much misunderstood as devadasis. No one has been as badly maligned as devadasis. There can be no other example of the truth being twisted in a most blatant manner.

The truth is that devadasis were an essential part of Indian temples. They performed useful functions at temples like cleaning of temples, lighting lamps, dressing the deities etc. They sang devotional songs and danced in devotion to the deities. They taught music and dance to girls. They kept alive and developed a tradition of classical music and dance. Beyond these historical facts is a vast area of myths and false propaganda.

When the Europeans first arrived in India, they were surprised to see girls who sang and danced in temples. They called these girls as “nautch-girls”. For a European mind, a dancing girl could be just an entertainer performing for the pleasure of rich men. The idea of art as an offering to God was unknown to them. To their medieval mindset, a dancing girl was showing off her body and was no better than a prostitute. Yet, there is no mention in any historical book written by early European visitors to indicate any evidence of prostitution on the part of “temple-maids” or “nautch-girls”.

In 1892 an appeal was made to the Viceroy and Governor General of India and to the Governor of Madras. The appeal for the first time mentioned, “That there exists in the Indian community a class of women community commonly known as nautch-girls. And that these women are invariably prostitutes”. The appeal was made by an organization called “Hindu Social Reforms Associations”. This was a part of “Anti-nautch movement”. The people behind the movement included some missionaries.

The replies received from the Governor of Madras and from the Viceroy denied the allegation that the “nautch-girls” were prostitutes. Yet these so-called reformists continued their “reform movement”. It was customary in those days to invite devadasis to every festivity in well-to-do families for singing devotional songs and for dancing. The so-called reformists started campaigning against this practice.

From all historical records, it appears that till that point of time a devadasi was a respected member of the community. She was considered auspicious. A bead from her necklace was essential for the managalsutra of any bride. (This practice continued till very recent times. At the time of my marriage, a bead was got from a devadasi). Such a respected member of the community was sought to be painted black and converted into an immoral prostitute.
No one knows the motivation behind maligning devadasis. Here was a poor woman who was dependent on the community; who had hardly any land; who had no organization or support from the Government. She faced the organized power of the urban, educated groups who were backed by the ruling class. Her basic livelihood was threatened. She could do nothing about it. Slowly, she was left with no means to keep her body and life together. In due course, the malicious false statements became true. Devadasi, left with no other means of survival, had to become a prostitute.

This was neither an easy journey nor was it complete. Many devadasis took to prostitution, but there were many more who resisted. A large number took on male patrons to whom they were generally loyal. Recent surveys and studies have confirmed that a majority of former devadasis is engaged in some work like agricultural labour or is working as coolies.

Last year I visited Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for conducting public hearings on the subject of Devadasis. There were six public hearings (two in each state). At every public hearing, the women demanded that they should not be branded as prostitutes. They did not know that their demand involved undoing a propaganda carried out for more than a century. They are carrying on their struggle for dignity well aware of the fact that they belong to an institution on the verge of extinction.

There is no doubt that the institution of devadasis is dying or is almost dead. It could not and should not have survived after temples ceased to occupy their place of glory. Yet, it survived and caused untold misery to the affected women. There are less than fifty thousand devadasis (including former devadasis) in the country today. Most of them are not practicing any of the customs associated with devadasis. The institution of devadasis cannot be revived since the supporting institutions have ceased to exist. Soon devadasis will be a subject of history.
On their way to the pages of history, these women are demanding justice. In an attempt to slander temples and Hinduism, these women were defamed in the worst possible way. The women who kept dances like Bharatnatyam and Odisee alive for centuries deserve a honourable mention in the pages of history.

While we recount the so-called reformist movement, we must also remember the Revival Movement, which received strong support from Theosophical Society of India. This movement did not revive the devadasi practice. Instead it preserved the classical music and dance of devadasis. It was due to this movement that the art of Sadir (traditional dance of devadasis in Tamil Nadu) evolved into Bharatnatyam. Rukmini Arundale, who took up the cause of evolution of Sadir into Bharatnatyam, was groomed and encouraged by Annie Besant.

The present day devadasi is a shadow of her former self. She works as a manual labourer and lives with a man who cannot or does not marry her. She needs our assistance to live a life of dignity. But even when we extend the hand to help her, let us give her due dignity that every woman deserves. Let us look at her with compassion rather than moral condemnation.
The present day devadasi needs empathy and rehabilitation. But the devadasi in the pages of history needs neither of the two. She demands her rightful place as an artist as an upholder of classical arts. Let us change our view of history and get over the biases that our colonial past has given us. Restoring devadasis to their due place in history is not a favour to devadasis. We owe it to ourselves to be able to face our own past without shame or remorse.

NEW DELHI: As the Olympic torch was flown into the Chinese capital on Monday to be taken around the world, the shadow of Tibetan pro-tests over the Beijing Games seems to be growing. Now, Indian football captain Baichung Bhutia has refused to run with the flame when it reaches New Delhi on April 17. Bhutia faxed his decision to the Indian Olympic Association on Monday after he had been chosen for the honour of carrying the Olympic torch on the India leg of its journey. Talking to TOI , Bhutia, a Buddhist, said, ‘‘I sympathize with the Tibetan cause. I have many friends in Sikkim who follow Buddhism. This is my way of standing by the people of Tibet and their struggle. I abhor violence in any form.’’ Bhutia emphasized that he had not been requested by any group to pull out of the torch run. ‘‘This is an absolutely personal decision. I feel what’s happening in Tibet is not right and in my small way I should show my solidarity.’’ Bhutia is not the first public personality to have distanced himself from the Beijing Olympics. In February, Hollywood director Steven Spielberg withdrew as an artistic adviser to the Olympics over China’s support to the Sudanese government at a time when the regime had been charged with massacres in the country’s Darfur region. Last week, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he did not rule out France boycotting the games if the situation in Tibet worsened. Suresh Kalmadi, president of the IOA, denied any knowledge of Bhutia’s faxed reply. ‘‘The fax has not reached me as yet since I’m not in my office,’’ he said. Kalmadi added that several top athletes like P T Usha, Milkha Singh and Gurbachan Singh Randhawa have been invited for the event. Randhawa, when asked by TOI whether he would carry the torch, said: ‘‘I have received an invitation to run with the Olympic torch and I will proudly do it. I know about what is going on in Tibet but the Indian government is not protesting. So why should I?’’ But Bhutia, not known for having strong political views, has made up his mind. Never in his football career spanning more than 15 years has Bhutia transgressed the line that separates sport from politics. VATICAN CITY -- Thou shall not pollute the Earth. Thou shall beware genetic manipulation.
Modern times bring with them modern sins. So the Vatican has told the faithful that they should be aware of "new" sins such as causing environmental blight.
The guidance came at the weekend when Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti, the Vatican's number two man in the sometimes murky area of sins and penance, spoke of modern evils.
Asked what he believed were today's "new sins," he told the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano that the greatest danger zone for the modern soul was the largely uncharted world of bioethics.

"[Within bioethics] there are areas where we absolutely must denounce some violations of the fundamental rights of human nature through experiments and genetic manipulation whose outcome is difficult to predict and control," he said.

The Vatican opposes stem cell research that involves destruction of embryos and has warned against the prospect of human cloning.
Archbishop Girotti, in an interview headlined "New Forms of Social Sin," also listed "ecological" offences as modern evils.
In recent months, Pope Benedict has made several strong appeals for the protection of the environment, saying issues such as climate change had become gravely important for the entire human race.

Under Pope Benedict and his predecessor Pope John Paul II, the Vatican has become progressively "green."
It has installed photovoltaic cells on buildings to produce electricity and hosted a scientific conference to discuss the ramifications of global warming and climate change, widely blamed on human use of fossil fuels.
Archbishop Girotti, who is number two in the Vatican "Apostolic Penitentiary," which deals with matter of conscience, also listed drug trafficking and social and economic injustices as modern sins.

But Archbishop Girotti also bemoaned that fewer and fewer Catholics go to confession at all.
He pointed to a study by Milan's Catholic University that showed that up to 60% of Catholic faithful in Italy stopped going to confession.
In the sacrament of Penance, Catholics confess their sins to a priest who absolves them in God's name.
But the same study by the Catholic University showed that 30% of Italian Catholics believed that there was no need for a priest to be God's intermediary and 20% felt uncomfortable talking about their sins to another person.

ROME, Italy (AP) -- A Vatican official has listed drugs, pollution and genetic manipulations as well as social and economic injustices as new areas of sinful behavior.

The Vatican has updated the list of mortal sins to relate to the age of globalization.

Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti said in an interview published on Sunday by the Vatican's daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, that known sins increasingly manifest themselves as behavior that damages society as a whole.
Girotti, who heads the Apostolic Penitentiary, a Vatican body that issues decisions on matters of conscience and grants absolutions told the paper that whilst sin used to concern the individual mostly, today it had a mainly a social resonance, due to the phenomenon of globalization.
Catholic teaching distinguishes between lesser, so-called venial sins, and mortal sins.
When asked to list the new areas of sinful behavior, Girotti denounced "certain violations of the fundamental rights of human nature through experiments, genetic manipulations."
He also mentioned drugs, which weaken the mind and obscure intelligence; pollution; as well as the widening social and economic differences between the rich and the poor that "cause an unbearable social injustice."
Girotti said the Catholic Church continued to be concerned by other sinful acts, including abortion and pedophilia.
He said Church authorities had reacted with rigorous measures to child abuse scandals within the clergy, but he also claimed that the issue had been excessively emphasized by the media.
His comments came at the end of a week-long Vatican conference on confession.
A recent survey said that 60 percent of Italian Catholics do not go to confession.
Traditionally the Catholic church has had a list of seven deadly sins, that of lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride established by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century.
The terms entered the popular vocabulary after the publication of Dante's "Divine Comedy."
The deadly sins are in contrast with venial sins - relatively minor sins that can be forgiven.
A person that commits a mortal sin risks burning in hell unless absolved through confession and penitence.
Now the Vatican says it is time to modernize the list to fit a global world.
On hearing the Girotti's suggestion, some priests thought it was a good idea.
Father Antonio Pelayo, a Spanish priest and Vatican expert noted that it is time for both sinners and confessors to get over their obsession with sex and think about other ways humans hurt each other in the world in which they live.
"There are many other sins that are perhaps much more grave that don't have anything to do with sex - that have to do with life, that have to do with the environment, that have to do with justice," he told AP Television.
Father Greg Apparcel, a local priest said that the Pope may have been talking About this aspect of sin as a response to the recent "Italian confession" survey.
Apparcel also hinted that the announcement may have a wider agenda ahead of the Holy Father's trip to the United States and his speech to the United Nations.
"There is some sound going around that perhaps he is going to speak about ecology and environment, and if he does, this is kind of preparation for that," he said.

Myspace seems to be one of the few good sites where you express yourself, connect with friends and make new ones. But there are some guidelines, some limits, which you should always follow to make your experience online a better one. You can’t just post anything you feel like.

Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want the world to know, like your phone number address and specific whereabouts anything that would make it easy for a stranger to find you or you may find yourself in trouble.

People are not always who they say they are, avoid meeting people whom you do not know in person. If your curiosity is too strong and you must, meet in a public place, bring a friend or trusted adult. Teens should ALWAYS have their parents permission first.

If you feel harassed or feel something is inappropriate about someone’s behavior report it to MySpace authorities. Don’t post anything whether it is a photograph or some other type of information, that may embarrass you later or that you will have to pay the price for later in life.

Parents should monitor the online hours of their chilrend, the sites they are viewing and the friends they are making online. Myspace will delete users less than 14 years of age or those misrepresenting their age.

Always remind children the dangers of putting private information in a public place and let them know that whatever they post, adults can also see, so they shouldn’t post photographs and information they don’t want an adult to see.

Although the cases of a bad guy online hurting someone offline in real life is not that alarming to some, especially at this present day and time, there is an old saying ‘precaution is better than the cure’. You shouldn’t live under a stone thinking that nothing will happen to you, in this ever changing world everything is possible and all it takes is just a little care from your end.

Allow me a dose of hardened market realism concerning Barack Obama’s landslide victory in Wisconsin. The race is over. Hillary Clinton is over. Her electability is over. Bill Clinton’s political invincibility is over. The Clinton Restoration is over.
It’s over.
Obama got to the far left faster than Hillary did. He out-organized her, out-fundraised her, out-speechified her, out-hustled her, out-dressed her, and out-presidentialed her. He outbid Hillary for votes, one promised government check at a time. His 17-point margin of victory in Wisconsin was incredible. It says he can’t be stopped.
Outside of the whacko ultra-left Madison college population, which is even worse than the Ohio State population, Wisconsin is a lot like Ohio. And Ohio campuses will go for Obama. Think faculty voters, grimly determined for a left-wing takeover of America “from the bottom up,” to use the Saul Alinsky community-organizer phrase. As goes Wisconsin, so goes Ohio.
Not even Hillary’s last-minute bashing of business, free trade, and free-market capitalism — which was a complete repudiation of her husband’s presidency — could save her. Obama got there first, with a style and elegance that Hillary simply couldn’t match.
And it came out of nowhere. On the eve of the Wisconsin primary, Hillary did a hard-left imitation of John Edwards’s populist and demagogic soak-the-rich rhetoric. She trashed some of the greatest businesses in America — oil, credit-card, insurance, and pharmaceutical firms. Wall Street and lending firms. It all must have come as quite a shock to the alumni of the Bill Clinton White House who are working for her campaign.
Robert Rubin may have been too busy tending to Citigroup’s sub-prime collapse to keep Hillary on the reservation. But where were Wall Street’s Roger Altman and Washington’s Gene Sperling when Hillary discarded the pinstripes for the polyester lefty-union pantsuit?
Bashing business comes naturally to Obama. But for Hillary it was a complete failure. Exit polls from Wisconsin say the trade protectionists went with Obama. Union members? Obama. People who think the economy’s in trouble? Obama. Folks who don’t think it’s in trouble? Obama. People making less than $50,000 a year? Obama. More than $50,000 a year? Obama.

Her biggest apology came in response to a question about comments by her husband, Bill Clinton, after the South Carolina primary, which Obama won handily. Bill Clinton said Jesse Jackson also won South Carolina when he ran for president in 1984 and 1988, a comment many viewed as belittling Obama's success.
"I want to put that in context. You know I am sorry if anyone was offended. It was certainly not meant in any way to be offensive," Hillary Clinton said. "We can be proud of both Jesse Jackson and Senator Obama."

Oprah will announce her next Book Club selection. The front page of Amazon offers a sneak peek. It's appalling. Given Oprah's unmitigated support of James Frey, author of her last pick, despite the revelations that his memoir is pretty much all made up, I've learned to rely on Oprah for compelling works of fiction masquerading as the truth. Just like Dr. Phil's advice and those low-fat cupcakes she says won't cause you to put on any weight. Well, not if you eat fifty of them. Not if you eat fifty. Anyway, so I see her latest pick, and now, of course, we know the truth.

Oprah thinks the Holocaust never happened. It's appalling. The book is Night, by Elie Wiesel, an eloquent and moving Holocaust memoir. But now, thanks to Oprah, all we can do is wait. Wait for The Smoking Gun to get its crack team of researchers on the case, so we can find out the truth. Wait for the evidence to appear, wait for the sham interview on Larry King Live, and wait for Oprah to once again defend the truth of something it's clear to her and to everyone isn't true at all. Oprah knows exactly what she's doing. The James Frey thing -- just like Bush's sham first choice for the Supreme Court, Harriet Miers -- was a decoy to set up what was next. Expectations were lowered after Bush picked Miers, and now Sam Alito can slide right through to confirmation, despite the evidence that he drives around his neighborhood with a dog-catcher's truck, snatching up all the children playing outside and taking them home to his backyard altar where he sacrifices them to the God of Unrestricted Capitalism.

Similarly, it wasn't James Frey that Oprah was concerned with. She knew his book was fiction all along, but she wanted to set up the pattern. Now everyone knows that when Oprah picks a memoir, it's not real. And that's how she's going to brainwash the country that the Holocaust never happened. She's an evil, evil woman, with a frightening agenda, and somehow she must be stopped. I'm not sure how, but hopefully someone will find a way. Before she strikes again, with her next selection, perhaps David McCullough's 1776, which will prove once and for all that we never actually gained independence from Britain, and suddenly the price of tea will go through the roof and all dental insurance will be eliminated. She needs to be stopped. For the sake of the nation.

If you check out that Amazon page for Elie Weisel's book, you'll find what I think is a pretty hilarious user review: "I have read many accounts of the Holocaust, but I think this one is the clearest. It is a short story (thank goodness!) and not cluttered with lots of dialogue." Yes, thank goodness it's a short story. Thank goodness it went so quickly, the killing and everything, so we wouldn't have to read too many pages. Thank goodness no one talked, or that dialogue would have been a burden to read and really eaten up my lunch break. Thank goodness the story of the Holocaust is so concise. Yes, thank goodness.

The version of Night without the Oprah sticker, which you can get for $1.69 used instead of about 4 times that price, has some other gems in the user reviews. Seriously, you can check for yourself:

Anti-Mahatma remarks create furore in Uttar Pradesh assembly

Lucknow, March 11 (IANS) Uproarious scenes were witnessed in the Uttar Pradesh assembly Tuesday over remarks made by Lok Sabha member Yogi Adityanath of the Hindu Mahasabha against Mahatma Gandhi.

The issue brought arch rivals Samajwadi Party and the Congress on a common platform for the first time in recent history.

Members of the two parties not only shouted slogans but also stormed into the well of the house and in one voice condemned the allegedly 'dubious' attitude of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the issue.

It began with Congress legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari seeking to raise the issue through a point of order. He took strong exception to Adityanath's remarks questioning Mahatma Gandhi's status as the father of the nation.

'Gandhi was not the appropriate person to be called the father of the nation. Instead, the mantle should have gone to someone like Lord Ram or Krishna,' Adityanath, who represents Gorakhpur, told a gathering of youth at the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS)-run Saraswati Shishu Mandir here Monday.

Besides the local rank and file of the RSS, city mayor Dinesh Sharma of the BJP was also present on the occasion.

Tiwari trained his guns on the BJP and said all those subscribing to the BJP ideology were followers of Gandhiji's killer Nathuram Godse.

Resenting the remark, BJP leader Hukum Singh said: 'We have deep regard for Mahatma Gandhi and we all refer to him as Bapu too. But that does not mean that anyone who does not agree with that could be bracketed with the murderer of Gandhiji.'

'The title of the 'father of the nation' is not a constitutional position, but a sobriquet given by people out of utmost regard for Mahatma Gandhi. Therefore, everyone was free to express his opinion and that was perhaps what the Gorakhpur MP had done,' Singh argued.

Singh added: 'We all hold Gandhiji in very high esteem but the fact remains that some fake Gandhis have been using the name only to take political mileage.'

At that point, Tiwari got infuriated and led the Congress members into the well of the house.

As Tiwari and others chanted 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram', Gandhiji's favourite hymn, Samajwadi Party members too trooped into the well and raised anti-BJP slogans.

This was preceded by strong speeches by Samajwadi Party leader and former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, who is also Leader of Opposition in the house.

Coming out in open support of Tiwari, he seconded the demand for action against the Hindu hardliner MP for anti-Gandhiji remarks.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Laljee Verma opposed Tiwari's insistence of allowing the issue to be raised through a point of propriety. Amid the din that prevailed, Speaker Sukhdeo Rajbhar adjourned the house for 30 minutes after which other issues were taken up.

US Spy satellite to plummet to Earth

A "large" US spy satellite has gone out of control and is expected to crash to Earth sometime in late February or March, government sources say.
Officials speaking on condition of anonymity said the satellite had lost power and propulsion, and could contain hazardous materials.
The White House said it was monitoring the situation.
A spokesman said "numerous" satellites had come out of orbit and fallen back to Earth harmlessly over the years.
"We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause," said Gordon Johndroe, who speaks for the US National Security Council.
Questioned by The Associated Press, he would not be drawn on whether the US would try to destroy the satellite, perhaps with a missile.
An unnamed official quoted by AP said the US government was keeping lawmakers and other countries abreast of the situation.
Fuel hazard
The satellite contains the rocket fuel hydrazine, a government official told AP on condition of anonymity.
A colourless liquid with an ammonia-like odour, the fuel is a toxic chemical and can cause harm to anyone who comes in contact with it.
John Pike, director of the defence research group GlobalSecurity.org, said an uncontrolled re-entry could risk exposure of US secrets.
Spy satellites typically are disposed of through a controlled re-entry into the ocean so that no one else can access the spacecraft, he was quoted by AP as saying.
The military expert believes that shooting the satellite down would create debris that would then re-enter the atmosphere and burn up or hit the ground.
In his estimate, the satellite weighs about 20,000 pounds (9,000kg) and is the size of a small bus.
It is possible, he adds, that this one died as long as a year ago and is just now getting ready to re-enter the atmosphere.
Another expert, Jeffrey Richelson of the National Security Archive, said the satellite was probably a photo reconnaissance satellite.
Into the ocean
AP notes that the largest uncontrolled re-entry by a US space agency (Nasa) craft was Skylab.
The 78-tonne abandoned space station fell from orbit in 1979.
Its debris dropped harmlessly into the Indian Ocean and across a remote section of western Australia, the US news agency says.
In 2002, officials believe debris from a 7,000lbs (3,200kg) science satellite hit the Earth's atmosphere.
It rained down over the Gulf, a few thousand miles from where they first predicted it would crash.

If life is a journey, what is the destination? We asked people 50 and over to share their most deeply held beliefs. The result is an illuminating glimpse into America’s spiritual core

For all the nudging and pushing and jockeying for position among the sweaty tourists who surround me on the floor of the Sistine Chapel this summer morning, it’s nothing compared with the cyclone of activity going on up there on the front wall.

In Michelangelo’s painting The Last Judgment there’s little doubt about who’s going where. On the left, a swirl of saints and martyrs ascend Heavenward, their faces a mix of rapture and shock. They soar triumphantly, flanking the figure of a Risen Christ. On the right, it’s a decidedly downward trend, a slightly more populated mix of eternal unfortunates being dragged, pushed, and hurled into the abyss. I step around behind the altar—a vantage virtually no one else seems interested in—and marvel at the nearly hidden figures of three apelike creatures, seemingly the gatekeepers of a fiery furnace that is glimpsed just beyond.

In appearance and execution The Last Judgment is archetypical Mannerist art. But the fact is, the nuts and bolts of Michelangelo’s vision are shared by the vast majority of 50-plus Americans.

The film follows the story of a young Texan named Joe Buck (Jon Voight), who works washing dishes in a seedy restaurant. He wishes to leave the restaurant, declaring to a workmate, "What the hell have I got to sit around here for?" As the movie opens, Joe dresses himself like a rodeo cowboy, packs a suitcase, and quits his job. He heads to New York City in the hope of leading the life of a "kept" man. He tells people he meets, "I ain't a for-real cowboy, but I am a hell of a stud!"

Joe's naiveté becomes evident as quickly as his cash disappears upon his arrival in New York. He is hilariously, yet sadly, unsuccessful in his attempts to be hired as a "stud" for wealthy women. The naive Joe meets the crippled Enrico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), a third-rate con man who easily tricks Joe out of twenty dollars by offering to introduce him to a well-known pimp, who instead turns out to be a religious fanatic.

Joe flees the scene in pursuit of Ratso, but he is long gone. As Joe's money quickly runs out, he finally attempts to make money by sleeping with another man, but even this plan goes awry. (The novel does refer to previous homosexual activity by Joe, but explains that he'd pursued it more in hopes to please a male friend than out of desire.)

Joe then spots an unsuspecting Rizzo at a diner. Joe has been homeless after being locked out of his hotel room for failure to pay the bill. He has been sleeping in all-night movie theaters and bus stations. Joe angrily shakes Ratso down for every penny he has, but Ratso surprisingly offers to help Joe, by sharing his "place"; an apartment in a condemned building. Joe reluctantly accepts the offer, and they begin a "business" relationship, helping each other pick pocket, steal and further attempt to get Joe hired as a "stud".

The events of Joe's life are told in mostly chronological order, interspersed by flashbacks. He had been to church and baptized as a boy, but had only frightening memories of the experience, and he related religion with disappointment. The only two people Joe loved were his grandmother Sally, and his onetime girlfriend "Crazy Annie" (called "Chalkline Annie" in the novel). His grandmother raised Joe after his mother abandoned him, but often left him alone to go off with boyfriends. (One of them, a wrangler named Woodsy Niles, was Joe's only father figure.) Sally died while Joe was away serving in the Army. Annie had been a promiscuous girl, who changed her ways after meeting Joe. This didn't sit well with the men of their hometown. After the two were caught together having sex in a car, Annie was sent to a mental institution. She remains a constant presence in Joe's mind.

Ratso's story comes mostly through things he tells Joe. His father was an illiterate shoeshiner who worked in a subway station, developed a bad back, and "coughed his lungs out breathin' in that wax every day!" Ratso learned shining from his father, but refused to follow (such as he could, after polio crippled one leg) in the old man's footsteps.

Joe and Ratso also steal things as they need them, and pull minor scams like loading up on saltine crackers and ketchup at diners, and checking every coin slot they see for change. They are both completely alone without each other, and a genuine bond develops between the two men. Ratso had a cough when the two first met during the summer, and as the story progresses, his health steadily worsens. His symptoms indicate a likely case of tuberculosis, but Ratso refuses to see a doctor, professing he'll be fine "when I get to Florida!" In the meantime he consumes cough medicines.

Joe and Enrico
At one point, a bizarre-looking couple approach Joe and Ratso in a diner and hand Joe a flyer inviting him to a party. The two men go together and enter into a Warhol-esque party scene (with some of the Warhol superstars in cameo appearances). The naive Joe smokes an entire marijuana joint thinking it was a cigarette, then takes a pill offered to him and begins to hallucinate. He leaves the party with a socialite (Vaccaro), who agrees to pay him $20 for one night with him. Ratso falls down a flight of stairs, but insists he is fine, and makes his own way home.

Joe and the socialite attempt sex, but he suffers from temporary impotence. After sleeping, they play a puzzle game together. She suggests that Joe may be gay, then continues to mildly tease him. Joe is suddenly able to perform, and the two have rough, enthusiastic sex.

When Joe returns home later, Ratso is in bed, sweating and feverish, and admits to Joe that he is unable to walk. Joe wants to take Ratso to a doctor, but Ratso adamantly refuses, saying he does not want to end up in Bellevue Hospital or someplace worse. He wants to leave New York for Miami; this has been his goal the whole time. Ratso is clearly gravely ill. A frightened Joe is determined to take care of his friend, and leaves the apartment.

Joe picks up an older male customer (Barnard Hughes), who tries to send him away at the last minute out of guilt. Joe is enraged when the customer gives him a religious medallion, instead of cash when Joe says he needs it. He beats and robs the man, stuffing the telephone into his mouth when he tries to call for help.

With the money, Joe buys two bus tickets to Florida. Joe stops to buy new clothing for Ratso and himself on the way. Joe throws away his cowboy outfit, and declares "I ain't no kinda hustler." Ratso's physical condition is clearly serious, and the point is driven home by a bus scene in which Ratso awakens to find he has urinated on himself. When he tells Joe, Joe makes a joke by saying, "You just made a stop that wasn't on the schedule." They laugh together, but their powerful denial is now evident. As they reach Florida and near Miami, Joe talks about plans to get a regular job, only to ultimately realize that Ratso has died sitting beside him.

After Joe informs the bus driver, the driver tells him that there is nothing else to do but leave him there until they arrive in Miami. The final scene is of a horrified Joe seated beside his dead friend, placing his arm around him, with several of the other passengers standing up and turning around in their seats to stare.
